Be proud of who you are and be proud of what you do

I am passionate about salespeople being proud of who they are and proud of what they do.

I believe that salespeople can only be successful in the selling situation, when they are face to face with their customers, if they are really enthusiastic and excited about being there.

If you are not proud of who you are and proud of what you do, then you shouldn’t be in sales!

There are too many people in the selling profession who are just not proud of what they do.

I was at a networking function recently. There were ten of us at the table all introducing ourselves to each other. When it was my turn I said “Good evening, my name is Ray and I am a salesman” The response from the group was “So what do you sell RAY?” This gave me an opportunity to speak a bit more about myself and my business.

(Try it sometime, tell someone you are a salesperson. I guarantee you they will ask you what it is that you sell. It’s a great opening line).

Then we got to Gary. When it was his turn Gary never said a word. He stuck his hand into his pocket and pulled out a pack of business cards, which he then handed out to each of us. Gary’s business card read;

Gary Viljoen.

Executive Marketing Liaison Consultant.

My first reaction was, wow, we have an executive at our table with us this evening.

And then we started asking Gary a few questions, to find out exactly what it was that he did, and by the time we had cut through that fancy title on his business card, it turned out that Gary was in fact a salesman!

Now its guys like Gary who are bad for themselves and its guys like Gary who are bad for our profession, because they are the kind of people in sales who never do anything about improving their knowledge and skills. And because of this, their performance is poor. And a poor performance leads to a poor attitude. And I don’t have to tell you, with a poor attitude; you simply won’t succeed in sales.

(Of course Gary Viljoen is a fictitious person but the story is true.)

Be proud of who you are and be proud of what you do. Don’t be afraid to tell people that you are a salesperson.

The importance of our profession cannot be over emphasized. Salespeople are the lifeblood of any organization.

Without us there would be no business, there would be no economy and there would certainly be no fun and excitement in the workplace.

Be proud of who you are and be proud of what you do. Because:

NOTHING EVER HAPPENS UNTIL A SALESPERSON SELLS SOMETHING!!
